History
Nineteen years ago a small group of people launched Bike to Work Day in Asheville. Claudia Nix, co-owner of Liberty Bikes was involved in the early campaign and recalls, at that time we just wanted to promote the National Bike to Work Campaign, encourage more people to bike and to increase awareness about the rights of cyclists. Over the years the event evolved into Strive Not to Drive Week focusing more broadly on a variety of transportation alternatives to the single-occupant car, including carpooling, walking and public transit.
What is Strive Not to Drive?
This is an annual event to encourage people to avoid driving their car for a day (or part of a day) to experience the benefits and opportunities of walking, bicycling, riding the bus, carpooling, telecommuting, etc. During the week of May 11 – 15, choose to avoid using your car for one day.
Why Strive Not to Drive?
Having fewer cars on the road helps everyone. Less traffic congestion helps to make our street safer and our air cleaner. Strive Not to Drive aims to reduce car use for one week out of the year. It also helps Western North Carolinians keep in mind that the car is not the only OR the best way to make many kinds of trips.
If you give car-free transportation a try, you may find that it is easier and faster than driving. You get out and enjoy the day. You don’t have to deal with traffic or get frustrated trying to find parking. Most importantly, it’s cheaper. Plus there is an added bonus - you get exercise at the same time! Once you try it, you may choose the car-free approach more often in the future.
So, during Strive Not To Drive, treat our communities to a little less pollution, a little less danger, indulge yourself with some extra exercise, and pay a little extra attention to your health and well being.
How can you participate?
All you need to do is reduce your car use. Make a pledge to ride your bike to work, walk to the store, share a ride with your friends, neighbors or co-workers, or ride the bus. If you really feel ambitious, get others involved - your employer, your school or your place of worship.
You can also sign up online to Strive Not To Drive at this link - which will keep you posted about all the differnet events in the area.
