Walking

Walking to work is an inexpensive and efficient form of transportation for short trips around town and to work.

Walking can be an option for people who live within a mile or two of their destination. For these people, it is important that safe and direct pedestrian access such as sidewalks, lighting, and designated crosswalks be available.

The City of Asheville has Bicycle and Pedestrian Services whose purpose is to increase bicycle and walking opportunities to the citizens young, old and individuals with special needs. By improving bicycling and walking conditions, it helps everyone lead safe, active and healthy lives.

Also, there is a Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force which meets the fourth Thursday of each month (with adjustments for Thanksgiving and Christmas, if necessary). The Task Force works for change in the cycling and walking environment in Asheville and the surrounding area.
