Announcing Strive Not to Drive 2011

May 16th-20th

Strive Not to Drive began twenty one years ago as Bike to Work Day with the goal of encouraging bicycle commuting. Over the years as concerns about air quality, physical inactivity and related health concerns, and traffic congestion have grown; the event has broadened to encourage any form of transportation other than driving alone in your car. Leading up to the event we ask you to take an online pledge to indicate your commitment to walk, bike, take the bus or carpool during Strive Not to Drive.

This year we hope to get our business community more involved with the campaign. Workplaces will compete against offices of similar size for the most SNTD participants and be eligible for great prizes. The registration deadline for workplaces wanting to compete is May 6.

Leading up to Strive Not to Drive, resources will be available to help new bike and bus commuters, including a Traffic Skills and Safety Class on April 10th in Downtown Asheville, a Bike Commuting class at REI on April 26 and a presentation on the transit system at Asheville Green Drinks on May 11. For more information and to take the pledge, go to https://webmail.buncombecounty.org/OWA/redir.aspx?C=888bc5f62e4b407e949057858c504909&URL=http%3a%2f%2fstrivenottodrive.com%2f.

The campaign is also about increasing awareness about what makes our roadways accessible for all users. The annual Mayor's Leadership Ride will introduce community leaders and policy makers to our successes and challenges in making Asheville and Buncombe a bicycle, pedestrian and transit friendly community.

During the week we will recognized those individuals in the community who serve as role models by biking, riding the bus or walking as their primary mode of transportation or have made a difference in making our transportation work for all users. Information on how to nominate someone for the Golden Spoke, Wheel or Sneaker Award or the Strive Not to Drive Leadership Award will be available in early April.
